Tom Dalton -
Metallurgist & Expert Witness
Employed as a metallurgist since 1977, specialising in the investigation of metal failures for over 35 years. Graduated from Manchester Polytechnic in 1988 with a master’s degree in metallurgy and became a Chartered Engineer with the Engineering Council in 1989, and a Fellow Member of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining in 2007.
Initially gained experience in the manufacture of tool steel products before progressing into the manufacture of Ni-base superalloys where he worked with Rolls-Royce on the research of superalloy single crystal turbine blades. Joined National Vulcan Engineering in 1991, becoming Laboratory Manager in 1998, and subsequently establishing and becoming a director of RCA Laboratories Limited in 2006.
Has made presentations at various national and international conferences and provided training courses for plant engineers, engineer surveyors, and loss adjusters. Also provided independent consultancy on multiple nuclear safety cases on behalf of the Health and Safety Executive. Detailed failure analysis reports have been prepared for a broad range of industries to assist plant owners/operators, manufacturers, insurers, loss adjusters, and legal professionals in understanding the root cause of metal failures. In recent years has acted almost exclusively as an expert witness and has currently investigated more than 1,600 failed metal components.
